Who would you choose to survive?

26 08 2008

SNL September Large Group – 7:30pm, Friday 9/12

Life or Death? You have been given the power to decide.  It is the year 2075.  SNL has built a submarine to escape the nuclear radiation, a byproduct of world war.   The plan was to resurface and repopulate the land once the radiation had been cleared.  Once construction of the sub was finished, SNLers rushed to take their seats.  When the sub was about to depart, four people came running towards the sub, hoping to catch a ride; however, there was only one seat remaining.  Each pleads their case to you as for why they should be on the sub.  Will it be the business man (played by L.L.) or the entertainer and athlete extraordinaire (played by H.L.)? Should it be the microbiologists (played by E.S.)? Or the domestic engineer (played by I.C)?

Come by Friday September 12 and decide for yourself.  Opening statements begin at exactly 7:30pm.  So come early and cast your vote.

(or, “Why Batman Matters, Now and Always”)

http://www.reelmovienews.com/images/gallery/the-dark-knight-characters_472x312.jpg

Rather than get all worked-up about how messed up the IOC scoring system is (or the lack of sportsmanship by certain countries), I’ve decided to channel all of my energy on something…a little more worthwhile.

Rather than bore you all with paragraphs upon paragraphs, I’ve decided to use bullet points to help explain why the Dark Knight has made such a deep impression after 60 years since his creation by Bob Kane.

* He’s not so much a superhero in the conventional sense (i.e., Spider-Man, Superman), lending his fans a credible, real-world feel, not to mention hope, that there could be such a vigilante with resources and physical/mental prowess. In fact, he’s modeled after Teddy Roosevelt when you think about it (thanks, History Channel!).

* His billionaire playboy alter ego, Bruce Wayne, is “the prince of Gotham”, and rightly so. A born and raised native, he lives in the downtown area (modeled after New York City, btw), giving him an even clearer opportunity to tune in to the city’s heartbeat.

* Himself a victim of a crime turned horribly wrong, Batman goes the extra mile to ensure that no blood, innocent or guilty, is shed by his hands.

* His preparedness in every encounter and battle is still legendary to this day.

* He’s an outcast “who can take it”, who’s willing to do the things no one else is willing to touch with their image-saving hands, even go so far as to take on terrible crimes that aren’t his. Sounds like Jesus to me.

Some recommended Bat-essential reading for those who want to further their enjoyment of the world’s greatest vigilante detective:

“Batman: Year One” by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli

“The Long Halloween” by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (both also of “Heroes” fame)

“The Killing Joke” by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland

“Batman: Hush” by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee

“The Dark Knight Returns” by Frank Miller (words and art)

Louder than the mob

18 08 2008

Hi there.  Remember me?  Pete?  The guy who likes using song titles for his posts?  Yeah, miss ya too.

So not only is this my first post in quite some time, and it’s also my first post-Sunday-talk post.

What a great thought-piece by Gary Alloway, immersing us into just what it means to be part of this “mob” then and especially today.

The words that stuck with me the whole time were, “Most of the people did not even know why they were there“.

Thank goodness for that one city clerk to bring some reasoning to the crowd, eh?

I can’t wait for more of LT’s friends’ messages…:)

Trust vs. Clarity

10 08 2008

Today’s sermon on Matthew 6 was a good reminder to me of how much I need to trust God. There are many times in my life when I wish things are clearer and that I want know which direction God is leading me. It’s hard to see that at times, like in my job. Ultimately though, I need to continue to serve God in all capacities and trust him all the time. I shouldn’t worry and be asking for clarity because He will provide. He has been there countless times in the past and will be there many times in the future.

We have a family whose son is going to UPenn for graduate studies. He is a seeker and seeking for assistance in locating an apartment near the school.

I know perhaps your church circle will be able to offer some help for him.  Please feel fit to refer this to an appropriate individual.

Thanks again for this Christian help and possible Christian fellowship.
